Number of people traveling abroad in Golden Week to rise for 1st time in 3 years
The number of overseas travelers from Japan during the Golden Week holiday period from late April to early May this year is forecast to increase 10.1% from a year earlier to 500,000, the first rise in three years, travel agent JTB Corp said Friday. The increase is attributable primarily to a substantial drop in jet fuel surcharges from a year earlier.
The number of people traveling to Europe is expected to grow 7.8% as Golden Week this year includes five consecutive holidays. The number of people traveling to South Korea is forecast to increase 32.4%, reflecting the yen’s sharp appreciation against the Korean won. JTB said the number of domestic travelers during Golden Week will also increase 2.9% to 21.4 million on the back of expressway toll discounts and cash handouts under the government’s economic stimulus package.
