The first time we tried out the Buddha Machine 2.0, we ended up walking in a perfect circle around the backstreets of Yoyogi-Hachiman for 20 minutes.
Such is the weird magic of this device. It’s a primitive music box that plays nine, endlessly repeating loops, either through a headphone jack or the built-in speaker.
Much like real meditation, the listening experience gradually shifts from boredom to bliss.
The machine is the brainchild of Beijing-based experimental musicians Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian, and has gained a cult following since the first one was launched a few years ago.
The updated model comes in a variety of colors, with a new selection of loops and—as a grudging concession to modernity—a pitch-control dial.
