Suspect escapes Mito police station after cop's tea drugged

Police on Monday were searching for a suspect who escaped from a police station in Mito on Friday afternoon after the officer questioning him fell asleep due to a narcotic in his green tea. Police said the 24-year-old detainee, Naoki Tsuge who had been arrested on suspicion of attempted theft, fled after the officer drank the sleep-inducing drug in his tea and dozed off.

Police said the drug had been prescribed for another detainee by a doctor, but they have no idea how the drug got into the officer’s tea, or whether Tsuge or someone else at the police station laced the tea. Police said there was no opportunity for Tsuge and the other detainee to have met, nor was there any evidence they know each other.
