the main character is a teacher and has to fight with the yakuza and it starts with a g, if it helps the actress was the host of this years japanese new years program.

The host in the Kouhaku show was Horikita Maki but if I remember well she didn't had any drama about yakuza things....
So maybe you're talking about the last year, who the host was Aragaki Yui and she worked with Nagase Tomoya in the drama My Boss, My Hero that talks about yakuzas...
It's the only one I can think about... U_U

I think you're thinking of "gokusen" - it was a manga before a drama. They just finished another season of it this past fall I think...?

The teacher in the drama is played by Yukie Nakama, right?

yep, Nakama Yukie also hosted end of the year program, and the drama is Gokusen, three seasons total i think...
