Is Jasmine the Next Big Thing?

She's often referred to as the next Utada Hikaru, but not much else is known about her. The nationwide media has shown barely a glimpse of young singer Jasmine (20), but her single "Sad to Say" has already topped the digital download charts. It's being reported as the first time an artist has reached No.1 on the charts before making their official debut, which Jasmine did a week later on June 24. The song hasn't even benefited from a TV commercial tie up, and its success has been mostly through online viral marketing and the comparisons with Utada. She also wrote her own songs from the start and did all her pre-debut promotions only on the radio. Jasmine says she considers Utada a big influence but was first inspired to become a singer at the age of 13 after seeing a gospel choir perform at the US military base in Yokota. She dropped out of high school in...

Way too early to draw comparisons with Utada. For all we know, she could end up being just a one hit wonder.

    i agree,
though she may enjoy a well success before many of the official debut can happen, you can't just suddenly assume her success with someone who already made so far/still up there such as Utada

I really like her music and voice. Her newest song No More is really good. I agree that it's way too early to compare her to Utada (the reason I began listening to j-pop <3), but Jasmine is talented. Plus her style is so cool! Green hair....

She reminds me of the girl who plays Miley Cyrus's friend on Hannah Montana, but that's just me.

I listened to her song "No More". I don't hear anything that would lump her with Hikki, so yeah, it's too early to be calling her the next Hikki.

I think she is very good and her songs are very catchy. No more is better than sad to say, but her green hair are so ugly. By the way, I think that her first album will be a platinum disc.

First off, I love her Sad to Say single. If I was listening to that alone I would probably agree with the 'new Utada' title that is being thrown around in relation to her. It's catchy, dramatic, and she sings from the diaphragm (which most japanese singers don't do).

But her second single is a bit a disappointment. It feels very same ol' same ol' in relation to her first single. I've given it several listens through just to see if it grows on me and it just doesn't. Not in the way Sad to Say did.

I think it's definitely too soon to be comparing her to a history maker like Utada. But I probably will end up buying her album whenever it drops.
