''Those who look to the Heavens prosper, those who defy it are no more.''

9th highest I believe.. Lithuania was the first?.. I remember reading on (my cellphone) CNN, just today, and the suicide of the day there was with a guy who drank pesticide and poisoning himself, but others in the apartments inhaled the fume, and become ill. They think it's because there are suicide sites, that suggest to the viewer that the said method of suicide was clean and elegant, and that there are more of these suicide websites popping up. This guy who died was a 34 year old, but there was a case a while back which involved a 14 year old girl with the same incident. Anyways, more info here
"quote from the same CNN page: Japan's government has long battled to contain the country's alarmingly high suicide rate.
A total of 32,155 people killed themselves in 2006, giving the country the ninth highest rate in the world, according to the government. "
mmm
stressed students in japan commit suicide
stressed students in the US shoot their classmates
._.

lol aya
i agree with what i read. for some reason, suicide is comtemplated by a lot of people in japan. not only high school students.
i wonder why.
i think religion has something to do with it. I dont mean to offend anyone either. Its just my opinion.
As much as you all can stand to watch shit I would piss, shit, and vomit upon, I would expect others to feel the same way, so I'm not offended. Just be glad that you all don’t like shit that I like. I sure as hell am glad I don’t like shit you all like.

No not religion...is culture I'm afraid...just like those samurais....who seppuku when they lose their battle. Lolx...just my wild assumption.
But one thing for sure is the stress from schoolworks and exams really make students feel smothering sometime.

lol.. I guess they don't use those "old style, heroic thingy"..
btw, what is the most common way to commit suicide there in japan now? pesticides? jumping off a bridge? rushing to a speeding car? well you name it, just curious tho..

Religion or culture has nothing to do with suicides, its more to do with everyday life and the pressures that people are put under by society.
In asia when your up against millions of students for top spots in higher education, the pressure along would bring most people over the edge and think about it, in asia if your school grades in any subject is lower than 90% your considered a failure. Doubt you'll see that kind of shit in the western world.

but why Japan?
maybe their culture, when they must succeed in every sector? especially in school
school kids in Japan are pushed to be great, to be number 1
so it puts too much pressure to them?
they finding it hard to be like what people want, so they have more tendencies to do suicide
thats my opinion thou![]()

There is a lot of stress involved with school life especially starting in middle school. Again competing for marks to get into universities is a major problem as well as being pushed into extra activities like school clubs, sports, and jobs. It's a much harder life than what we are use to in North America.

Hmm, I'm not sure if it's just school pressure...
If we look at it, most countries with high suicide rates are societies where people are expected to always be polite and keep to themselves, take care of their own business.
People commit suicide because they feel desperate, alone and isolated.
I once watched a TV show about depressed Japanese teens that shut themselves at home for months or even years, just playing games or whatever. One of them actually let bags of garbage and cans pile up all over the room and at his room door, an huge amount of it! (remember Nodame? that was NOTHING compared to that!) His mother couldn't take it out neither touch it because he didn't want her to, it was HIS garbage... At the time of the show, she actually haven't seen him in a couple of weeks since he was lost under all that trash... There was nothing that she could say or do, except to leave some food at his door. He needed time to find his way in life alone.
What is this?? In my house he would have had his a** kicked much before the 2nd bag of trash! Not doing house chores, no communication? hahaha...ha.
When I studied in Sweden I was also concerned with some Swedes there, but fortunately nothing ever happened in my corridor... Sadly it happened with people from other corridors plus a few missed attempts... Insane![]()

well vagabond and asay, like i said its my opinion. i believe its religion and no one is going to change my mind. at least you two arent.

Um...no...don't think it's to do with religion...though everyone is entitled to their opinion...Japan is predominantly Buddhist or Shinto and I know that in both religions suicide is frowned upon (I know, because I'm Buddhist)....I don't really know the extent to which the modern Japanese are religious though...anyways, I think it's a matter of culture really...as said earlier, it's probably rooted within the ideals of seppuku in Ancient Japan...you rather die than give up...it was seen a very honourable action those days.
However these days I think it's become a rather tragic 'trend' amoungst the Japanese...I believe Japan has one of the highest rates of suicide (correct me if I'm wrong) Within the student population, it's become so common due to the bullying crisis (again one of the worst in the world)...humans havea tendency of following suit...if one does it, then why not me...but seriously, something has to be done to stop this...just too awful.

Unfortunately, Japan's society is driven to succeed, and keeping face. Failure in school, romance, and employment denotes loss of respect and face. Since Asian communities are raised to suppress and internalize emotions, there's nowhere for depressed students or workers to turn to when in need of help, and they take the only way they know out.

Its the culture. Im asian, dropped out of school, and i get nagged at by my mom for being a bum, and being useless and how i used to excel in school OMFGWHATHAPPENED! all that crap on a weekly basis.
And yup. where i come from, dropping out is like considered a sin.

it's a shame that people have to resort to such measures to get out of such a "hard life" but it's been found that teenagers/students arent the only people who have it tough, its proven that everyone has it just as hard as everyone else, regardless at how old you are.. adults suffer the same pressure, promotions, job, car, security, look after kids, parents etc... and on top of that, because they're adults, they have to act like one... students dont understand that what they're going through isn't that bad and it is just character building.. yeah sure trying to compete for entrance exams and all are hard.. but out there, someone has it worse...
suicide is selfish as it doesnt consider all the people who become affected with the loss of a loved one...
