Violets are Blue, Now Roses are Too

Recently we reported on rainbow colored roses from the Netherlands, that were causing quite a craze in Tokyo, Japan. The craze has apparently not worn off, as one Japanese company has developed something quite new and original.
Suntory Ltd., who also produces alcohol, created the world’s first genetically modified Blue roses, which they will begin to sell next year.

“As its price may be a bit high, we are targeting demand for luxurious cut flowers, such as for gifts,” he said. The exact price and commercial name for the blue rose have not been decided.
They created the flowers by implanting the gene that leads to the synthesis of the blue pigment Delphinidin in pansies. The pigment does not exist naturally in roses.

    whao..

that's nice...they genetically modified fruits, animals and plants. this is juz another example of a successful genetic modification of plants (another example would be like glow in the dark orchids).

i think flower shops used to stain them with blue ink to get those very artificial looking blue roses!
its great thou that they finally have a strain of roses that can naturally produce blue roses!

isn't there a primary school experiment where students can turn any old rose blue by soaking it in blue dye ...
Anyway ... i hope they do not come up with black roses next ... that though cool-looking looks really freaky at night ...

That's blue? It looks more like lilac (or something like it) to me... ^_^'

And I don't think you need to worry about black roses; we don't find a single truly black flower in nature. And, if I remember well, I think I read somewhere that black flowers simply would not survive, but I can't find a source... so I might be wrong.

I think they are really pretty. Feel that they are more elegant than the normal red roses. Blue roses... Hmmm, remind me of the blue roses in the anime BLOOD+!
