Samurai Swords to be Banned in UK

British government said it would ban the sale of samurai swords because the weapons had been used in a number of serious, high-profile attacks.

The Home Office said the Sumurai swords would be added to the Offensive Weapons Order from April next year, meaning they could not be imported, sold or hired.

However collectors of genuine Japanese swords and those used by martial arts enthusiasts would be exempt from the ban.

"In the wrong hands, samurai swords are dangerous weapons," Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker said.

"We recognize it is the cheap, easily available samurai swords which are being used in crime and not the genuine more expensive samurai swords which are of interest to collectors and martial arts enthusiasts."

The Association of Chief Police Officers said the swords were not a common weapon but they had been used in a number of significant incidents.

In 2000, Robert Ashman murdered a Liberal Democrat councilor at the offices of Cheltenham MP Nigel Jones, who was also seriously hurt in the attack.

A year earlier, Eden Strang seriously wounded 11 people when he went on the rampage with a samurai sword at a Roman Catholic Church near his home in Thornton Heath, south London.

@ krykrykrynunit: I mean most of the countries carry out such regulation as well. Take example of most of the Asia countries, Katana is totally forbidden to be put onto shelf.

Are you sure about that? It's perfectly legal in Taiwan and i would presume it's legal in other asian countries too >.>

Yeah I positive about it! Like in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Katana is not openly salable (easy to acquire).

well...to me, the odds of getting murdered with a samurai sword is less than that of getting shot by a gun on the streets in US. if they wanna ban swords, then they shld ban guns 1st.

btw; if u think that woman is freaky~wait till u see serena williams~she's a monster.

it is a safety precaution to ban samurai swords, because after all they said some crazy people already used cheap swords to go stabbing people, and they're allowing samurai sword collectors and martial arts enthusiasts to buy swords anyways. it is like gun control, so only special people with license are allowed to buy these things. i don't see it being a bad thing, except for crazy people who want to stab people because now they'll just have to use a kitchen knife.

i think that is a woman cause there's women learning beside her, but oddly she has no woman 8 figure. she looks more like she's on steroids LOL

Then, why they don't ban ALL the KNIVES? (Yes, I know, it's impossible. that's why it shows how ridiculous it is to ban only katana.)

It's ridiculous to limit a certain category of cutlery... :\ Seriously, if they want to kill someone, they'll use anything for that. It happened to be "katana" they had around.

    ROFL is this for real?

Well in Australia if you can't get hold of a samurai sword then you can always buy a machete :S at a market place for $5 dollars. >.> all dodgey sellers
Divide 30 by 1/2 then add 10. The answer is >.> u'd be surprised most people get it wrong.
