UFOs 'Definitely' Exist, Japan's Government Spokesman Says

Yes, UFOs do exist, Japan's top government spokesman Nobutaka Machimura said as reporters erupted in laughter.

Japan's air force has never spotted a UFO, but the country's top government spokesman said Tuesday he "definitely" believes they exist. Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura was speaking to reporters in response to demands lodged by an opposition lawmaker for an inquiry into "frequent reports of UFO sightings."

The government said in an official reply that it had "not confirmed sightings of unidentified flying objects believed to be from outer space."

Still, "I definitely believe they exist," Machimura said as reporters erupted in laughter.

In a written response issued Tuesday to opposition Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Ryuji Yamane, the government said the air force had often spotted "birds and other objects beside aircraft," but no UFOs.

But the prime minister stuck to the official view.

"I have yet to confirm (that UFOs exist)," Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda told reporters later in the day.

Tokyo keeps a vigilant watch over Japanese airspace and is ready to scramble fighter jets to intercept suspicious airborne objects, the government reply said.

I'm rather glad to know someone who has such a high position in the society (the country) believe in the existence of UFO. Especially from the old generation. And, especially from Japanese people. I found it cute. I mean, never abondoning the childhood dream? Ah well...!

To think about it actually Japanese people have more fantasy and imagination that other races in the world. Look at it this way, the gundam, macross, and the transformers and dragonball, all this supernatural concepts are derived from Japan in 198X. And it is not surprised that the older generation in Japan have this kind of thinking.~~

I'm actually not surprised. If anyone is going to believe in UFOs why shouldn't it be Japan. Just as vagabond was saying that it isn't that surprising. Japan should probably be the first to find a UFO or maybe the US already did (according to "conspiracy theories"). I somewhat agree with the guy, but mainly just because I would like something incredible to happen in my lifetime. Something that could change the world for a better place, not destroy it.

Defense Minister Ishiba troubled by legal issues if UFOs arrive

TOKYO — Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Thursday that unidentified flying objects may exist and he would be troubled over potential legal issues if one arrives and it requires action by the Self-Defense Forces.


"There are no grounds that allow us to say definitively that they do not exist," Ishiba said regarding UFOs at a news conference, joining other top officials in talk about the subject triggered by a question from an opposition lawmaker. "Various possibilities should be considered."

"If Godzilla comes, typically it would require mobilization of SDF troops for disaster relief," the minister said, citing the monster character in the famous movie that destroys buildings and other things in sight. "It's the same with Mothra," he added, citing another character.

Ishiba indicated it would be difficult to determine on what legal grounds the SDF may be mobilized when, for instance, there is a violation of Japanese airspace but the violating subject is not hostile.

"Would that be mobilization for an act of defense? That would not be the case if they say, 'Everyone on the Earth, let us be friends,"' Ishiba said. "Or what can we do when we can't figure out what they're saying?"

Ishiba added he was only speaking his own personal views and he did not mean his ministry is working out ways to deal with UFOs.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's cabinet endorsed a position Tuesday that Japan believes the existence of UFOs is unconfirmed in response to a question posed by a Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker.
