I own a very old model from Archos (a french brand I think), called Jukebox Recorder 10.
It has 10Gb and it's a hard drive disk, not flash memory or anything like that. Which means you can actually hear the heads reading the disk... The batteries only last a few hours (5 or 6 at most).

I'm still using it though, and I use ROCKBOX also. It replaces the default firmware with a much better one. At least it can read asian characters now.

I own a first generation 8Gb Sandisk Sansa. I love it. It sounds good and is easy to use.

It has a couple annoyances like you have to load different firmware for Japanese and it supports only one play list, but those are minor.

What I like about it the most that I don't have to use any program to load it. I can copy files and directories directly onto it. The other thing I like about it is that I can plug in a microSD card and extend it's memory.

My girls have 8Gb Applie iPods and while they're pretty nice I still think the Sansa is the better machine.

    Cheers.

Well, I used to use my iRiver 40GB to listen to my mp3; it’s pretty old for its age now worked for 4 years. Now if I try to use it... the battery just depletes after 5 songs or less, it wasn't like this before. :<

Now I'm using my PSP as my mp3 player for now, I guess D:
